So you’ve got yourself an idea for a startup. Brilliant. So, where are you going to begin your work for it? Do you have the right resources? Or do you have an idea that’s so good that you can’t wait to share it with the world? Do you have the passion or hard work to get things done?
Now’s the time that you need to ask what you’re prepared to put into a startup first.
There’s the passion, in which you’ve got your heart in the right place. But anyone can dream. You need to make sure you’re ready to put in an effort. And that’s where hard work comes in.
That brings up the age-old question. Which way should you go first? Should you let your passion get you miles ahead? Or should you bust your butt and make the hard work do your thing? Passion or hard work — that is the question. Let’s take a look at both sides.
Passion
Passion is defined as “an intense, driving or overmastering feeling or conviction.” It truly drives us, and sometimes we can have a passion for…anything. Be it a hobby, a particular movie (Star Wars!), or even a person. We can make passion happen.
But when it comes to creating a business, passion needs to have some sort of drive behind it. Yes, you can plan everything out and have everything set to go in your mind. But unless you have the physical push to make that happen, you’ll just end up being a daydreamer.
But don’t give up on that passion. Just develop a game plan. That means putting together a blueprint while it’s still fresh in your mind.
- What do you want your startup to do?
- Who do you want on board for your startup?
- Is it a competitive field?
These are questions you need to ask yourself during the conception of your plan.
What’s important, though, is that you keep that passion. Even if something discourages you along the way. Hit a roadblock? Don’t call off the road trip. Instead, find a way around the problem. Perhaps there’s a new area of your startup you can establish. Or a person you can bring in.
This means keeping it through the establishment of that business as well. Don’t just let each day get boring. Approach it with a fresh perspective. What clients can we attract today? What new ideas can we get on the board when it comes to attracting new business? Don’t just plan the beginning of your start-up. Plan its growth.
That does answer a bit about the passion or hard work argument on that side. But you have to have effort to make things happen, correct? Let’s look at…
Hard Work
To get anything done, you have to put in the effort. Even if you’re placing an online order for a pizza, you’re filling out the online menu. You’re choosing toppings, finding the nearest location, putting in credit card information. It’s not happening automatically.
When you’re putting together a start-up, you need to understand that effort is necessary. Even if you’re an investor, you’ll want to put time into your research.
- Is this the right startup to pour money in?
- Does the person behind the startup seem “on the level”, so to speak?
- What can you put into it to make it something even better?
But, obviously, if you’re building a start-up, you need to put in the most work. Sure, you’ve got everything on paper. Now it’s time to build it. Find a good location for the business. Locate key investors that actually care about what you want to do. Locate the means to create a good product. Grab the tools. Make it happen.
Hard work does a lot when it comes to creating that dream business of yours. However, it shouldn’t all be about hard work. That’s because if you put in too much effort and not enough thought, you will burn out. We’ve seen it happen. It’s something that’s completely avoidable with just a little thinking. It never hurts to pace out either.
So in the argument of passion or hard work, there’s one definitive answer…
A Bit of Both
At the end of the day, it’s not passion or hard work. It’s passion and hard work.
Having ample amounts of both means wonders for what business you have in mind. What’s more, having equally motivated people on board with you means things will be done faster and more efficiently. That’s why, in any startup, you want to find the right people to go on the journey with you. Employees that know the balance between passion and hard work.
Get these types of people behind you — and maybe like-minded investors as well — and there’s no place you can’t go.
