Lightyear also continues a Pixar tradition of using their own in-house creatives to voice an important character. Director Peter Sohn (The Good Dinosaur) is the very Zen voice of Buzz’s AI companion, Sox the cat. “We’re asked not to cast internally,” Susman admits about that particular tradition that is flouted regularly. “You have to really want that person and you have to make a really good case for that person. And we did try. We really earnestly tried to find somebody else to play the role of Sox. We just couldn’t get it. Not the way Peter brings that sweet vulnerability and that cleverness. We just couldn’t get it from anybody else.” “And he was honored,” MacLean adds. “He’s a really good performer and really easy to direct because he just does it. As a director, he knows how to get the funny out of it and just sort of adjusts a little bit.”
Eggers’ own journey to “The Northman” began shortly after “The Witch” premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival — where Eggers won the directing prize — when he went with his wife on a vacation to Iceland. Through mutual friend Robin Carolan (who, along with Sebastian Gainsborough, composed the music for “The Northman”), Eggers met Björk, who would wind up playing a mystic seeress in “The Northman.”It was Björk who introduced Eggers to Sjón, her longtime friend and collaborator. Eggers and Sjón hit it off and stayed in touch. Some time later, Eggers met with Skarsgård, also a producer on “The Northman,” who had long been trying to make a Viking story, along with “The Witch” producer Lars Knudsen.
MacLane had big dreams of Lightyear being his first solo feature film and marking his directorial debut. Lucky for MacLane, some dreams do come true and Pixar immediately adored his vision. As the film’s release date inches closer and closer, Screen Rant had the opportunity to attend the first-look presentation for Lightyear, which takes a deep dive into the Toy Story spin-off. While discussing the outstanding cast for the film, producer Susman shared just how dedicated and hard-working Evans was in order to make sure he held up to the high standard of the hero he is portraying. She also revealed the reasons the creative team behind the film ultimately felt as though they needed a fresh, new actor to play young Buzz, and why Evans was definitely the man for the job.
