April Bartlett is a solo female founder. After 15 years in the financial services world, she took her side hustle full time as an esthetician. Being a salon owner herself, she’s in a unique position to know what her peers want and need. She is the target market!

Problem the startup solves:
Spend $20 or $400 and you get the same thing in the world of wax and sugar pots. These are the devices that warm the wax used for hair removal. All warmers on the market are simply On / Off / Temperature. There are no other features that help us do our jobs and they are not attractive. How the client feels in an environment drives their desire to spend money. Mella Warmers solved the top 4 problems with all warmers on the market. 1. Appearance. 2. Cleanliness. Mella has a patented silicone skin that covers the outside making clean up a breeze. These skins come in 6 color choices to further compliment salon decor. 3. There is no warmer that goes cool enough for sugar and hot enough for wax. Mella has the full temperature range. 4. Time, it takes 30-60 minutes to heat the product in order to be ready for that first client, which means you have to go in that early. Mella has a Mobile App so you can turn your salon on/off from your phone.
Progress and current status:
We launched about a year ago without any marketing and are selling well considering. There’s been a lot of demand for a larger version of what Mella already is. This consistent request and need has led to a Kickstarter campaign to make that happen. Just launched I hope to bring Mella’s big sister to reality!
What is a crazy story about the startup?:
The early years of this startup were rough! The original engineer turned out to be a thief! The wild ride included police, shady Pakistani businessmen, international battles for mold ownership and a trial…..at the center of it all is just a girl and wax pot! How crazy is that?! That crazy girl at the center is still here and fiercely protecting this company.
What is a company the startup looks up to, and why?:
Joy Mongano is my spirit animal and I mean that in the best way possible. Our stories are similar in so many ways.
The company in four years will be…
The “Apple” of salon equipment. I’ve modeled the branding, logo, imaging etc after this company. Mella 1.0 is up and running. Mella 7.0 is coming alive as we speak (7.0 because it holds 7 pounds of wax). Mella 2.0 will be next which is Mella 1.0 with dual wifi 5g compatibility etc. Mella will be the “Apple” of salon equipment.
