How To Build a Fitness Startup From Scratch

These days, there are a lot of people who aren’t in the best of shape. The pandemic is partly to blame, but, of course, there’s also the temptation of eating those sweet treats. So it doesn’t hurt to look around and see who can help you shed a few pounds. Why not try out a fitness startup?

You might have seen them before. Private gyms, health experts, assignable trainers – they come in all shapes and forms. And while some of them are more effective than others, it’s neat seeing what kind of variety of services they have to offer.

That may motivate some of you to begin some form of fitness startup. But it’s not just as simple as buying a set of dumbbells and opening your doors. There are some steps you’ll need to take to get the most out of your business. Here are a few to follow:

How to Build a Fitness Startup

Find a Hook with Your Fitness Startup

So you want to be a personal trainer. Great! But where do you want to train? The idea here is to find that special hook that sets you apart from the dozens of other trainers and gyms making the rounds. Anyone can have a general fitness program, but what is it about yours that makes it stand out?

It’s here that you want to find that “hook” that sets you apart. That doesn’t mean creating a whole new physical routine from scratch, although that’s not a half-bad idea. Instead, it means finding a forte in what you want to teach. Want to master the art of yoga? How about hopping on board the growing Zumba fitness train? Or maybe you want to specialize in physical therapy and help people get back to a normal stance?

The good news is there’s enough room in the market for all these, as well as specialty teachings like spin class and powerlifting. The first step you’ll want to take with your fitness startup is realizing where you want it to progress. Don’t just go for a “general” approach – be specific and reach that niche audience!

A Fitness Startup Is Not an Overnight Process

The next thing you’ll need to realize is that it takes more than a direction to get started. You need expertise. Walk into a fitness startup blindly and you’re asking for trouble. Not only can someone get hurt trying to do an experimental workout you’re not sure about, but it can result in legal trouble as well.

So get educated. In fact, if you have the expertise, that’s one thing, but it really helps to get some form of degree. These include places like the DEAC (Distance Education Accrediting Commission) or the NCCA (National Commission of Certifying Agencies). Some have online courses, so look around first to see what’s available.

Again, it really depends on which category you choose for your fitness startup. From there, find the right schooling so you learn everything about the exercise you’ll teach. And we mean everything – cool down, getting started, what to do when there’s discouragement, etc. You don’t want to leave any stone unturned in this regard, so you know what to do if there’s a problem.

You’ll Need Tools, Permits, and Insurance

So you’ve got a direction and expertise for your fitness startup. Now it’s time to get the rest going. That means equipment. Depending on what kind of exercise you’re teaching, you’ll need the proper tools. That means lifting equipment, dumbbells, that rubber ball for stretching (the big one to sit on) and so much more. Do your research and make sure you have everything necessary, in case your consumers prefer something else to try. Keep them in mind.

Next, you’ll need to make sure you get a permit to run a gym or private exercise startup. This is required because, without it, governing agencies can come in and clean house. So make sure you get the zoning for your property and all the ground it’s going to cover. If you’re in a higher-up office, make sure you space out the equipment as well, so there’s no weight danger to the floor below. (You never know.)

Last but definitely not least, get insurance. This is a must with a fitness startup. Not only does it cover you in case of any accidental damage, but it can also expand and help you with any sort of legal issues. That’s not to say it resolves them completely, but it certainly helps compared to having nothing. So make sure you get all of these before you even think about opening your doors.

With these three helpful steps, you should be on your way to beginning your fitness startup. Just remember that it takes time and patience, just like losing weight itself. It’s a process, but one you can build up with – and win!
