Startup Founders:

Eoin McMillan, Founder,

Startup one-liner:

Sourcetable is a spreadsheet that syncs to your application and business data.

Problem the startup solves:

Most people, at most companies, have trouble accessing their data. Sourcetable makes it easy for people to access data from most business applications and databases. That data is accessible in an interface that everyone can use and understands: a spreadsheet.

The kinds of ways people use Sourcetable include:
— Operators accessing their Postgres data to setup automated reporting functionality.
— Marketers using Sourcetable to build CAC or LTV reports using their Hubspot, Google Ads and Klaviyo data.
— Sales managers connecting their Salesforce or Pipedrive data to build charts and graphs visualizing their team’s sales funnel.
— CFOs building operating models using their Quickbooks and Stripe data
— Analysts loading and querying CSV files that won’t fit in Excel or Google Sheets
— Founders who need a lightweight Business Intelligence solution, but have limited engineering resources.

Progress and Current Status:

Sourcetable is currently live, private beta.

What is an Inspiring Story about the Startup?:

We initially set out to build a Machine Learning company. While selling these advanced technical services into large enterprises, we observed a repeated problem that we had also faced ourselves: most people, at most companies, have too much trouble accessing their data. It was a problem so simple we almost overlooked it, but then a client asked us to build them a solution and we started to take it seriously.

So from there, we pivoted into building data cubes so Microsoft Excel users could access their MySQL data. That was a profitable niche that really opened our eyes up to the massive opportunity in the market. It wasn’t just business analysts who couldn’t access their data, it was marketers, and sales people, and operators, and founders, and researchers and students and executives, and all manner of knowledge worker.

We came to realize that Google Sheets and Excel both had a data infrastructure problem that their plugin ecosystems could not solve — this is why data imported from plugins breaks so often and is hard to trust. Although it was a massive undertaking that would take many years of work before coming to market, we realized that the only way to build a better spreadsheet was to own both the interface and the data infrastructure, so we decided to rethink and rebuild a new, modern spreadsheet from the ground up.

That spreadsheet is Sourcetable.

What is a Company the Startup Looks Up to, and Why?:

We look up to Atlassian. It’s another B2B SaaS company, with Australian founders, that makes quality software products to help people run their company. Atlassian focused on providing value to their customers, and have been rewarded with meteoric growth (they are now a public company). Atlassian builds software products for both technical and non-technical users, and tends to act as a system of record for the companies that use it.

Sourcetable, a spreadsheet company with data connectors, data storage, and both no-code and advanced SQL functionality, has a similar opportunity to build a large scale B2B SaaS company that focuses on providing users with value from their data.

The Company in Four Years Will Be…

Spreadsheets are the largest SaaS category there is. Google Sheets and Excel are used by over a billion people, and Excel alone is worth $164bn+.

Sourcetable has the opportunity to rethink and rebuild this core analysis platform. By innovating with modern technology, and focusing on providing value to our users, Sourcetable has the opportunity to build a viable competitor to Microsoft 365 and the Google Product Suite.

Sourcetable is a remarkably simple product with a variety of advanced features. In addition to offering all the formulas and functionality people expect from a spreadsheet, it also offers full Business Intelligence, Data Infrastructure and Object Management Functionality. The surface area for expansion is limitless.
