Startup one-liner:
We develop FISHSCOPE, powerful AI “Fish & Feed Monitoring” solution that replaces laborious sampling and feeding through Computer Vision tech.
Problem the startup solves:
Our solution, FISHSCOPE makes laborious tasks in fish farming easier such as sampling, feeding, and fish health diagnosis through Computer Vision technology. FISHSCOPE focuses on Growth and Behavior of fish to raise fish better than anyone else.
– Growth Monitoring: Accurately estimate the weight of the fish and check the growth daily basis.
– Feed Optimization: Identify the appetite of the fish and proposes the optimal feeding strategy.
– Health Monitoring: Check and Inform fish-farmers of damages and changes in the appearance of fish.
Progress and Current Status:
We have secured all the Core Computer Vision technologies needed to operate our solution, FISHSCOPE, and are currently conducting proof of concept on our contracted testbed. Recently, we were able to attract seed investment from Bon Angels, one of the top seed investment firms in South Korea, as well as from HiteJinro, an F&B company that actively invests in agriculture and aquaculture startups. Furthermore, we have established partnerships with various companies and research institutes, including GS E&C.
What is an Inspiring Story about the Startup?:
The current method of seafood production is not sustainable. We have caught too much seafood, and the ocean has become empty, making it impossible to catch as much fish as before. Uncontrolled aquaculture is also unsustainable. Diseases are becoming endemic, and the coastal ecosystem is becoming barren due to aquaculture. We have reached a crossroads. We can either continue to stick to the current method until we can no longer produce seafood, or we can move towards sustainable and controllable aquaculture.
TIDEPOOL aims to transform aquaculture into a controllable sustainable way. We will control the seafood production process based on data, and make sustainably produced seafood at competitive price in the market. Through this, we will reform seafood production industry with sustainable way.
What is a Company the Startup Looks Up to, and Why?:
We have a deep respect for Patagonia’s business philosophy. Sustainability can sometimes seem like an unattainable goal for companies. It can feel like the only solution is to immediately stop what you’re doing. Patagonia sought to lead by example as a sustainable company and replace other unsustainable companies with sustainable ones.
The same is true for the seafood industry. Ceasing consumption of fish caught through destructive fishing practices appears to be the only sustainable solution. However, this goal is not achievable solely through voluntary means. We aim to resolve the paradox of sustainability in the same way as Patagonia. TIDEPOOL’s goal is to control the seafood production process based on data, and make sustainably produced seafood at competitive price in the market.
We hope to follow in Patagonia’s footsteps and become an example of sustainability for others to follow.
The Company in Four Years Will Be…
TIDEPOOL, we have an ambition to become the first aquaculture company to be representing Korea. In four years’ time, we aim to be the company with the largest collection of data on fish farming in Korea, which will enable us to become the most powerful leader in the business at raising fish in fish-farm.
