Brothers Ryan and Andrew started Original Grain 10 years ago at the ages of 21 and 23 with a dream of creating something that wasn’t on the market – watches reclaimed with unique materials that told a unique story. Today the world’s premier makers of wood and steel watches are back on Kickstarter with a dream to bring watchmaking back to America.
The American Heritage Collection is the brand’s first project that features a watch made with 150-year-old Prohibition-era wood and flame-torched whiskey barrels made in the U.S.
How Did They Do It?
After three years of samplings, OG partnered with companies in six different states to create this collection of watches. From cutting all the wood components in Minnesota to creating and assembling their Ameriquartz movement in Arizona and leather suppliers in South Carolina, No step was overlooked to create this stunning collection of 5 watches.
While most companies develop watches overseas and create watches that are entry-level, Original Grain has looked up market to develop watches that carry a rich history and quality craftsmanship. Throughout its years, it has developed a following by collaborating with world-class brands. Brands include Taylor Guitars, MLB, Buffalo Trace, TRD, Indian Motorcycle, and Yellowstone National Park. With each partnership, OG takes authentic materials to create a one-of-a-kind timepiece.
The Impact
Since its beginning Original Grain has wanted to give back. OG founders say lessons learned from their Dad have been a foundation of their company. “Never leave something behind you wouldn’t put your name on,” says Andrew Beltran – co-founder. The company now applies these lessons learned to how they conduct our business daily. To date, Original Grain plants one tree for every watch sold and has planted over 600K trees. It also has donated over 100K to Guitars for Veterans and cleaned up over 250K lbs of ocean-bound plastic. That goes beyond their efforts to give a second life to the reclaimed materials used in production.
